The surprise that arrived
Arrived without subtlety.
The dark lifted upward with the shade
And there a tree was
Where one was not yesterday.
Some magician must have whispered
Magical words into the soil at night when
I was awake,
but unaware, when dreams
Might have swirled
But were untouched on the bed.
But there it is--
Green and alive and breathing
Only few yards from me.
Ah! Now I remember the dream,
Now I remember the magician,
Who had not whispered spells in the night,
But had drawn symbols
in the morning.
Now I remember!--all morning,
The morning before the morning
Of my surprise
A man had been digging a hole outside
In which to plant a tree.
