Lens piece

My professor, the one who used to be a lawyer, told us in class last week that we are entering a new phase together. The class, because we are learning how to write. And she, because she has MS now.

I met with her tonight in her office in the gym to discuss my draft. She sat next to me scribbling so I could be free to brainstorm. I have her three pages of scribbles now, and am trying to remember all the excellent things she said. I looked up MS yesterday. It is a disease that cripples you over time, and yet she was the one taking notes.

On a whim, I had brought a box of Runts to give her at the end of our conference. But I kept the candy in my pocket and gave her a hug instead, after telling about what happened to me seven years ago. She understands where I'm coming from when I talk about Christ. She is one to whom the gospel is deep and familiar, though not quite the all-in-all. Nothing is by accident, she told me, and I believe her. I also believe that God has His ways of bringing people to salvation.
